On the LHT today.
Caleb had a class he goes to each Saturday so we decided to take the Trucker with his new Yepp seat. He grew too big for his i-Bert seat, his trailer is a bit of a pain in the wind and his tag a long is good for short trips only at the moment due to him being too young to go too far on it. He has done a few short runs in it but needed to see how he went on a slightly longer run, both mileage and time wise as we have a tour of Orkney coming up and a few other longer tour runs.
Its very easy to fit, there's a section bolts onto my rack and then the seat mounts, locks in and is key locked on. The seat is a metal frame and the body is a sort of rubberised material with plenty of drain holes. It was recommended by a lot of people who tour with kids on a few forums and facebook. I originally looked at it as its compatible with an Xtracycle setup and also a Big Dummy, one of which we are hoping to build for some longer tours and general riding. The other runs on this were with it mounted to Heathers Specialized and not the Trucker, hence why we giving it a shake down on it. It actually worked better on the Trucker as it was far more stable, maybe due to the longer stays of the trucker, which also usually feels better when loaded. Due to this mounting on my rear rack we will use my rear Ortliebs on my front rack when we go away. Between these, the bar bag and a bit of space on the front rack we should be fine.
Anyway it ran really well, stayed stable and while it weighs a little bit, though far better than most, and Caleb weighs a bit as well, it was nowhere near as 'weighty' as I thought it would feel. The bike handled the same, steered the same, etc.
Caleb absolutely loved it, as he does with most of his bike rides or 'adventures' and he was comfortable at all times. Considering we had a good hours solid ride through the back country to get him into Thurso in time, then ride through town to lunch with mum and then a zig zag route home that must have been at least an hour and a half with stops and detours, that's pretty good. We did about 26 mile or so and thats pretty good for a four year old.
We just beat the rain home and despite the forecast it was pretty cold in the wind, but after a hot chocolate for Caleb and a coffee for me, we jumped in the car before dinner to drive up the road and see if the Puffins have returned to the cliffs. There were a few but nowhere near the numbers that will be there in the next few weeks.
So a busy day for me and for Caleb I think, as he is now in bed sound asleep.
